Worker Highlight: Hyon Leon

Hyon“My title is Hyon Chu. Rising up in America with a Korean title identifies you as “different” … you look different, your title is different, you are different. Earlier than you say a single phrase, earlier than you’re even current, you might be judged by your title, and it makes individuals uncomfortable.”

A 1.5 era Korean American, Hyon Chu Leon, director, information analytics and underwriting at DentaQuest, just lately shared her perspective with Profiles in Range Journal® after she was named as a 2022 Asian Chief Price Watching.

DentaQuest is very proud to share Hyon’s well-earned recognition. As founder and co-chair of the Asian American worker useful resource group at DentaQuest, Hyon has performed an integral position in advancing DentaQuest’s variety, fairness and inclusion (DEI) efforts and her work has helped promote a greater understanding of Asian tradition, languages and traditions. Hyon’s voice and perspective has been invaluable at DentaQuest and locally, and we’re delighted to take this chance to share extra of her story, in her personal phrases:

We Asian Individuals could have names that originate in a language apart from English, making their transliteration a problem for English audio system. Many people even have accents that forestall us from being understood and permit us to be simply dismissed. For 5 years of childhood, I used to be even in speech remedy for a supposed speech obstacle. It wasn’t till years later that my sister clarified, “you don’t have a speech obstacle, that was racism.”  One thing that outlined who I used to be as an individual, that prompted my lifelong worry of public talking, was racism each inside and structural.

However what’s most necessary is what you say, not the accent somebody hears. None of us sound the identical – aren’t we the melting pot? Doesn’t that imply it’s regular to have an accent?

Right this moment, companies are embracing a brand new give attention to variety, fairness, and inclusion (DEI). DEI celebrates who we’re and the place we’re from and acknowledges we’re stronger collectively. As co-chair and founding father of the Asian American Worker Useful resource Group at DentaQuest, I’m proud to be a part of this new period, but it surely isn’t simple – it’s laborious to weaken the established order.

So, let’s embrace the DEI period and open doorways for extra individuals. Name out the uncomfortable “different” of our names. Assist discomfort shift to familiarity. The pot has melted – embrace your title, embrace your accent, embrace your variations.
